A Bit About Haymans Gin

The Hayman gin distilling story starts in 1863 when James Burrough, a charismatic London pharmacist, an ancestor of the Hayman family, opened a small distillery in Cale Street, Chelsea. At that time, London’s gin of choice was Old Tom Gin, however James was curious about innovating and experimenting with different styles of gin. He experimented with a number of recipes, giving them names such as Burrough’s, Olde Chelsey, Beefeater and Black Cat and it was his curiosity that eventually resulted in the delivery of drier gin, which became known as London Dry.

The descendents of James have been distilling gin ever since and now the Hayman family is widely accepted as being the oldest family of gin distillers in the world.

In the same way as many a family business that has been around for more 160 years, the Hayman family’s gin journey has been full of twists and turns – from global conflicts, prohibition and dips in gin trends and even the sale of the business in 1987 until a portion was promptly bought back - by Christoper Hayman - so the family’s gin distilling journey could continue.  Christopher’s children now run the family business and are the 5th generation of Hayman’s to continue the family legacy.

Today Hayman’s is based in Balham, South West London, only a few miles from the original family distillery in Chelsea.
